You can return to exercise after Botox, but confirm the timing with your injector before booking your next workout. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises waiting two hours before strenuous activity. Some providers recommend a longer pause. Your written aftercare instructions should guide your own schedule.
If running, lifting or fitness classes are part of your routine, bring that up at your Botox consultation at Luxura Med Spa. Planning ahead is easier than sorting through conflicting advice after your appointment.
Why do exercise recommendations differ?
Aftercare advice is not completely uniform. In Cleveland Clinic’s Botox aftercare discussion, cosmetic surgeon James Zins, MD, notes that evidence showing physical activity affects how Botox settles is limited. He also explains that exercise can raise blood pressure and may increase bruising.
That distinction matters: a precaution intended to limit bruising is not proof that an ordinary movement will ruin your results. It also does not mean you should disregard the instructions from the clinician who treated you. Ask what their recommended waiting period is intended to address and whether it applies to the activity you have planned.
What counts as a strenuous workout?
The AAD includes heavy lifting and activities that raise your heart rate in its description of strenuous activity. Tell your injector what you actually do rather than asking only, “Can I exercise?”
Running, lifting and high-intensity classes
Describe the intensity and timing of your planned session. For example, a heavy lifting workout immediately after an appointment is a more specific question than “Can I go to the gym today?” Ask for a clear return time and whether symptoms such as soreness or swelling should change that plan.
Walking, yoga and heated classes
These activities can vary widely. Mention whether your class is heated, involves prolonged inverted positions or puts pressure on your face. Ask about an easy walk separately from a strenuous session. Do not treat a blanket online rule as personalized clearance for every kind of activity.
What else should you avoid right after treatment?
Mayo Clinic’s Botox guidance advises not rubbing or massaging treated areas for 24 hours and not lying down for two to four hours. Confirm your provider’s instructions for your treatment, including any additional procedures performed at the same visit.
A practical appointment-day checklist:
- Ask when you can resume your usual workout and whether a lighter activity is appropriate.
- Get instructions about touching your face, skincare and massage.
- Tell the team if you have another facial treatment or a fitness event booked.
- Keep the clinic’s contact details and your written aftercare instructions handy.
What if you already worked out?
A workout does not, by itself, establish that something has gone wrong. Contact your injector, explain when you exercised and what you did, and describe any symptoms. Avoid trying to “correct” the situation by rubbing the injection sites or arranging extra treatment on your own.
Bruising, swelling and headache can occur after Botox. Seek immediate medical help for trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking. These are not symptoms to manage with a rest day or a routine follow-up message.
