Small white bumps under the eyes can be frustrating, especially when acne products do not help. They may be milia, but not every bump in this area has the same cause. Identifying the lesion comes before choosing a treatment.
What Are Milia?
Milia are small keratin-filled cysts beneath the skin’s surface. They often appear as firm, pearly bumps around the eyelids and cheeks. They are generally harmless and do not always need treatment.
Why an Assessment Matters
According to DermNet’s dermatologist-authored milia guide, milia can resemble other conditions, including syringomas and xanthelasma. Some arise without an obvious trigger; others develop after skin injury. A bump’s appearance alone is not a reliable basis for treating it at home.
Tell the clinician how long it has been present, whether it has changed and which products or procedures you have used. Bring photos if it looks different from week to week. A painful, bleeding, rapidly changing or otherwise unusual lesion deserves medical assessment.
Do Not Squeeze or Pierce Under-Eye Bumps
Do not try to extract a bump with a needle, blade or squeezing tool, even if it seems easy to remove. Working close to the eye adds risk, and manipulating an unidentified lesion can cause injury.
A facial scrub or aggressive acid treatment is also not a substitute for diagnosis. Avoid repeated attempts to “open” a bump and tell the clinician if you have already irritated the area.
What Options Might Be Discussed?
Confirmed milia may be left alone, as some resolve over time. A suitably trained medical professional can discuss removal when appropriate. Treatment choice depends on location, number of lesions and the diagnosis. Recurrence remains possible.
Retinoids and procedures used for widespread milia require professional guidance; products intended for facial skin should not automatically be applied to eyelids. A facial or peel should not be booked on the assumption that it will remove every white bump.
